I am in the middle of many projects and will be singing some songs I wrote at various marches. One thing I haven’t been asked yet that I would love to talk about in the era of the ascendance of (President-elect Donald) Trump and his cabinet choices (is) what role I think music may play in American culture the way it did in the 1960s with the anti-war movements. It’s lovable enough to last, and I won’t let that die. It won’t stop me from singing it and asking children to come and join me on stage and sing along with it either. It is an imbecilic reality that we just have to live with now. I met a minister once whose church would not allow him to play the song because they thought it was about drugs. There was a long period of time where radio stations wouldn’t play the song because of it. Penn Jillette: 'Donald Trump is very petty' I asked him once about it and he basically said he was just looking for a third and thought, “maybe this will work.” His third song he listed was "Puff the Magic Dragon," which is insane and stupid. Tambourine Man," which is about drugs, but it was not hidden, it was a direct reference. He had "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" on there, which is just absurd. That all started with a guy at a magazine that wrote about songs that had hidden drug references or had some subtext message that was about drugs or advocated for drug use. So, let me start by asking you what is the one question you are tired of being asked?ĪNSWER: I am not sure I am tired of being asked about it, but I am tired of how many people start by thinking "Puff the Magic Dragon" is about drugs. QUESTION: As a journalist, it can be hard to interview someone with more than 50 years in the entertainment business, because there is nothing really original to ask. So, let’s “Shake, Rattle & Know”: Peter Yarrow I spoke with Peter about his music, his years in the entertainment business, and perception of folk music today. According to his official bio, Peter has made dedicated efforts to bring folk music back into the mainstream by exposing children to folk music on a broad scale in their homes, summer camps, churches, synagogues and schools. An award-winning singer/songwriter, author and social activist, Peter brings music and awareness to folk music and social causes wherever he travels. In the wake of Mary Allin Travers’ passing, Peter decided to carry on Mary Travers’ and the trio’s tradition. Peter Yarrow - one-third of the legendary folk group Peter, Paul and Mary - will perform Friday, Jan.
